The Luremaking process

The lure production process starts with hand selecting each individual piece of wood for buoyancy, density, weight and grain structure. The type of wood used varies, depending on the characteristics needed for a particular lure. This careful selection assures the desired action is achieved for every size and type of lure. The photos and text on this page will take you on a tour of what a typical lure goes through before it is ready to use.

  1. A carefully selected wood blank is hand carved, shaping the wood to a rough profile of the lure.
  2. The first sanding further shapes and smoothes the rough blank.
  3. A groove is cut for installing the metal diving lip. Holes are drilled for hook rings and balancing weight.
  4. The metal diving lip, hook rings, and balancing weight are installed with epoxy adhesive.
  5. To assure deep penetration into the wood grain, lacquer is heated and then applied to the entire lure for a water tight seal. The front of the lure is primed for extra protection.
  6. Now the complete lure is primed, sanded to an ultra smooth finish, ready for hand application of the paint scheme and clear sealer.
  7. Finished lure, ready for tank testing and hand tuning for perfect action right from the box.
